Caring for the mane and tail is an essential part of good horse care.

Caring for your horse's mane and tail starts with the right products. To take proper care of your horse's mane and tail there are plenty of handy products on the market to help you.

Start by washing your horse. When you wash your horse it is important to wash both the mane and the tail with a shampoo and a conditioner. It's best to wash your horse at least 1x a month — more is fine, but less isn't! The dirtier your horse is, the faster the hair tangles!

A thorough rinse after washing also makes sure no sticky shampoo residue is left behind, which can cause further breakdown of care products. Avoid washing too often, as it removes too many natural oils from the mane and the tail. Dry hair tangles more easily than healthy hair.

Any conditioner keeps your horse's hair smooth and healthy. If you use a rinse-out conditioner, leave it in for a few minutes for maximum absorption and then rinse thoroughly. Apply a detangler to the mane and the tail before brushing if needed.

Hair that is regularly treated with a detangling product will be smoother. Shiny and smoother hair gets tangled less easily on windy days and/or when a horse uses its tail to swat annoying flies.

Tip: Use a pair of old riding gloves when using the detangler. They not only protect your hands, the product also rubs off onto the gloves and lets your fingers glide through the mane and tail more easily.

Also make sure your horse doesn't get tail and mane eczema, more info on this page.
